The room was bare but spacious. It was clear that this was one of the finest conveyancing firms Melbourne had to offer, particularly from everything she’d seen on her way in. Maphira couldn’t quite put a finger on it, but everything just had an air of success.
She wondered whether this would be the last of them, given there wasn’t long left before Project Bender’s test. Undoubtedly, though, there would be a few twists and turns left in the story. If Maphira had learned anything in her time as a captive, it was that the Conclave of Mechanists never liked to do things the simple way.
Maphira paced around her large, virtually empty room, wondering how she could mentally prepare herself for the things to come. Being such a nice space – perhaps a conference room – certainly helped. She couldn’t imagine if she’d been sent to some conveyancing firm located in Richmond instead. That would have been a nightmare. She hated that suburb, for no real reason in particular. The only thing worse would have been a Collingwood-based conveyancing building.
No, it seemed that these particular conveyancing lawyers had excellent taste in location, for Maphira had absolutely no issues with Bentleigh as a suburb.
As she continued to pace about, Maphira spotted something strange in the corner of the room. She picked it up, inspecting the odd object that was about the size of her thumbnail. It appeared to be some sort of earpiece.
Maphira tried the earpiece on, immediately hearing a burst of sound. It took her only a moment to recognise its source; her favourite radio station, Triple G. Applying a bit of pressure to the device, the frequency adjusted, finding a new station.
Immediately, she started searching for Mr Chowski’s station. It took a few minutes, but eventually, she heard the old-timey music that Mr Chowski loved to play between broadcasts. She felt relaxed, for a moment.
